Moosehead Love Story

Moosehead Love Story

Posted by Janet Richards Chasse on Feb 12th 2017

This is a dangerous love story to tell.  Because, I will for sure, leave out some of the key characters.  It's about a love so deep, it will never die.  It's a torch that the lovers are passing on to their children.  It's a love of Moosehead, and the small communities that surround it.

I know we're not unique, there are love stories like this in towns, neighborhoods, communities all over the world.  But here are a few of Moosehead's lovers.

They build snowmobile and cross country ski bridges.  They cut hiking, ATV, cross country skiing and snowmobile trails through the woods (in blackflies!).  They coach, organize and teach kids' programs: Kayaking, hiking, basketball, sailing, dogsledding, skiing, and more.  They build and maintain playgrounds, a gazebo, and handicap ramps.

They groom the trails, shovel snow, and cook benefit suppers.  They take the elderly and sick to Doctor's appointments, and deliver meals. They lead scouting programs and volunteer at the library. They serve on boards and committees, referee games, and help during rescues.

They help with the dogsled races, parades, and the chocolate festival.  Ice racing, canoe races, craft fairs and other events.  The Moosehead Historical Society, the Sports Boosters, NREC programs, Greenville Recreation Department and the Fly in are supported by volunteers.  Our first responders are supported by volunteer auxiliaries.

Volunteers run our ski area!

The opportunities they give our children are astounding.  Mountains are scaled, ponds fished, and life long skills taught.

They raise money to fund their efforts, working while others are at play.

It's a true love story.  Thank you to Paul Ducey for many of the photos, a steady volunteer himself for many years.
