"16 Pleasant Street Doesn't Look like a Store"

Posted by Janet Richards Chasse on Jun 24th 2016

I hear that several times a week.  "You don't look like a store".  And, we're not, so to speak, a retail store.   The plan is for us to sell the products online, and we ship to you.  Sometimes, people pick up an order, if they're going to be here and want to save money on shipping.

This is my entry room where some orders are picked up, this was a very large order, 30 Gift Crates for a retreat.

Why are we only online?  From the beginning of this Moosehead Marketplace idea, I didn't want to compete with the local gift shops.  They have a very short season, and I know and like the shop owners.  So, I thought, why not focus on the shoppers who can't get to Moosehead, year round, 24/7?  I taught myself (with help from friends) how to set up an online store, and here we are!

I love the big pine on our front lawn.  Our family has lived at 16 Pleasant Street for about 25 years.  It's a 160 year old home.  We're only the 5th family in this house's history to live here.  We had a child care center the whole time my kids were growing up.  I figured I was staying home with mine, what's a few more?  We were licensed for 40 kids, and had a lot of fun here.

In the back yard is our workshop, where my husband builds the crates, and fixes everything of ours that breaks down, besides his full time job as a carpenter.  Which reminds me, if you drive by, looking for us, you'll think, "good grief, that house needs some paint!"  Yes we do.  It's hard to keep paint on old clapboards, but we keep trying.

The attached barn is the "warehouse".  When we first moved in, it was a barn, even with a 2 seater still in it.  But we put it on a foundation, insulated and sheet rocked, so it's a finished space to work in.  But it's not really suitable for retail, it can get rather messy with putting together and shipping the products.

So yes, Moosehead Marketplace is at 16 Pleasant St, at this very old house.
